School History
Lotts Creek Community School was founded by Alice Slone in 1933 in Knott County, Kentucky. Alice Slone, born in Caney Creek, Kentucky, traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, at the age of 15. She lived with Ann Anthony Bacon, the niece of woman suffragette, Susan B. Anthony, while attending high school. Alice had an  eagerness to learn, aside from wit and personality.

In 1932, she graduated from Ohio State University, earning her degree. Upon graduating, Alice felt a need to return to the mountains. She taught at Caney Creek for one year. She then decided to start a school on Lotts Creek, because she'd heard that there was not one. Her dream couldn't have been a reality without the help of community leaders and her will and determination. She wrote more than 3,000 letters a year asking for donations to bring a high school to Lotts Creek.

The first classes were taught in an existing building. In the beginning, Cordia, as it is called now, only contained a few books, a Sears catalog, and a bible.

In 1952, the three-story school building, a girls dormitory with a cafeteria, a boy's dormitory, and an office building were constructed.

In 1967, the gymnasium structure was  added.
